How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The committee will coordinate and advise the Secretary of Transportation, through the Administrator of FHWA, on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists.
How is membership balanced?*The committee is comprised of no more than 10 members of the motorcycling community with professional expertise in national motorcyclist safety advocacy, including.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The committee will meet at least once a year to provide a forum for the development, consideration, and communication of information from a knowledgeable and independent perspective.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The committee is necessary by law to coordinate with and advise the Secretary on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists including barrier design; road design, construction, and maintenance practices; and the architecture and implementation of intelligent transportation system technologies.

Outcome Increased Customer SatisfactionNoAction CommentAs a result of the MAC-FHWA's input, a trifold publication has been developed: Roadway Safety for Motorcycles(FHWA-SA-07-012) and a website has been established http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/mac/. In addition, motorcycle infrastructure concerns are being addressed in the work zone safety grants program and motorcycle resolutions are being implemented at AASHTO. Also, the MAC-FHWA is working with the MUTCD re: motorcycle signage for the next edition of the Manual.

% of Recs Partially Implemented CommentThe MAC has recommended examination and development of web based tools to notify State and local DOT’s of road hazards of concern to motorcyclists. The MAC has recommended the sites incorporate functionality to provide riders with this information until repairs are affected. This project is ongoing. RoadHazard.org is a benchmark site that provides this service to Florida, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.The MAC has shown interest and recommended investigation of a number of R&T issues that affect motorcyclists including: •Examining the skid resistance of intersection markings•Improving retro-reflectivity of signs and roadway markings•Considering the use of wider lane markings in order to increase visibility•Reviewing barrier designs used internationally, and identify those that are most forgiving when impacted by motorcyclists• Examining the use of various sealants on road surfacesAccess OtherNo
