How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The purpose of the Food Security Advisory Committee (FSAC) is to advise and assist the US Interagency Working Group on Food Security (IWG) in meeting World Food Summit commitments and in carrying out the goals put forth in the US Food Security Action Plan.FSAC achieves this objective by assessing the implementation of the US Food Security Action Plan and US efforts to meet World Food Summit commitments. The Committee pays special attention to advising USAID, the Departments of State and Agriculuture, and other federal agencies responsible for meeting commitments made at the World Food Summit and elaborated in the US Food Security Action Plan. These agencies are members of the IWG on Food Security. Finally, FSAC serves as an outreach vehicle to all non-governmental sectors concerned with food security and the international commitment of halving hunger by 2015, in order to maximumize civil society involvement in the implementation and refinement of the US Food Security Action Plan.
How is membership balanced?*With up to a maximum of 30 members, FSAC is comprised of the seven members of the Board for International Food & Agricultural Development (BIFAD) and representatives of agribusinesses and associations, agricultural cooperatives, commodity groups, non-governmental organizations and academic institutions.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings are held irregularly, as determined by the co-chairs in consultation with members and the IWG. Special attention is paid in the meetings to monitoring progress made in implementing the US Food Security Action Plan and policy and programmatic issues that impact US contributions to domestic and international efforts aimed at halving hunger by 2015.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This Committee was necessary because no other food security forum exists within the USG to articulate civil society opinion.
Why close or partially close meetings? There are no closed meetings.
Recommendation RemarksThe F.S.A.C. served to assist USG preparations for the June 2002 World Food Summit. No future role for the FSAC is envisioned at this time; also, approximately two-thirds of the members appointed to FSAC in 1996 no longer participate. Thus, USAID has determined that the FSAC Charter lapse.
