How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Commission holds periodic meetings during which they consider staff papers on subjects that they have directed the staff to reserach and prepare recommendations. During these meetings the Commission holds public sessions that permit the general public to address their concerns to the Commmissioners .
How is membership balanced?*The Commission was set up by P.L. 104-333. Section 13 (b) the members of the Commission shall include-- 1) the Secretary of the Interior, or designee; 2) the Secretary of the Army, or designee; 3) the Chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority, or designee; 4) the Secretary of Agriculture, or designe; 5) a person nominated by the National Goovernors' Association; 6) four persons familiar with the interests of the recreation and tourism industry, conservation and recreation use, Indian Tribes, and local governments, at least one of whom shall be familiar with the economics and financing of recreation related infrastructure.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Commission will meet every other month.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Congress has directed it by P.L. 104-333, Section 1021. The Congress finds that the Federal Government, under the authority of the Reclamation Act and other statues, has developed manmade lakes and reservoirs that have become a powerfil magnet for diverse recreationaL activities and that such activities contribute to the well-being of families and individuals and the economic visibility of local communities. The Congress further finds in order to further the purposes of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the President should appoint an advisory commission to review the current and anticipated demand for recreational opportunities at federally-managed manmade lakes and reserviors through creative partnerships involving Federal, State, and local governments and the private sector and to develop alternatives for enhanced recreational use oif such facilities.
Why close or partially close meetings? The Commission will not hold any closed meetings.
Recommendation RemarksThe Commissioners have different beginning dates
as the four Federal Commissioners were appointed
at the filing of the Commissioner Charter on 4/4/97
and the others were appointed at a different time
by the White House.
