How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The National Advisory Council on Indian Education (NACIE) advises the Secretary of Education and provides recommendations to Congress on American Indian and Alaska Native education issues for which the Secretary has authority. The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education funds the administration and travel costs of Council members.
How is membership balanced?*The NACIE members represent the diversity that exists in Indian communities today and are aware of the facets affecting social and economic factors. Some members come from traditional backgrounds while others live away from reservation areas in urban settings, similar to those Indian students experience in public and tribal schools. The majority of NACIE members work in education-related jobs from pre-school to higher and adult education.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*NACIE members are required to meet twice a year according to their Charter.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Council was initially created in 1972 under the Indian Education Act to advise the Secretary of Education on the administration of all education programs benefiting Indian children and adults as well as funding levels for those programs. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), 20 U.S.C. §7471. The NACIE members are from different tribes and geographic locations of the country and represent the diverse needs and interests of American Indian and Alaska Native people.
