How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*At the conclusion of each quarterly meeting, the Defense Policy Board presents its conclusions directly to the Secretary of Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense and/or the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
How is membership balanced?*The members are experienced and diverse. They represent a cross section of disciplines, including scientific fields. Many have served in previous Democratic and Republican administrations. Four retired general and flag officers from different Services provide an operational prespective. Several are former senior members of the legislative branch. Others are veterans of the State Department, DoD, and CIA. Still others are drawn from academia and private industry.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Board meets quarterly. The Secretary of Defense's continued personal interest in and appreciation of the Board's advice is demonstrated by his personal meetings with the Board's full membership and frequent informal discussions with the Board Chairman concerning topics for future study.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Secretary of Defense has determined that the independent advice provided by the Defense Policy Board on a wide range of geo-political and national security issues concerning the DoD cannot be obtained from any other DoD advisory committee.
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings are not closed to the public unless the Department of Defense determines that items on the planned agenda meet the closed meeting provisions of 5 U.S.C.§552b(c). Pursuant to DoD policy, closed meetings can only be authorized by the DoD Sponsor, the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy or designee, and only after consultation with the Office of General Counsel for the Department of Defense.
Recommendation RemarksThe recommendations are contained in the Board's meeting minutes which are classified.

The committee does not publish separate reports. Due to scheduling conflicts, the Administration transition and the appointment of a new Secretary of Defense no quarterly meetings where held in FY2017.

Department of Defense (DoD) policy between fiscal year 2007 and 2011 required that subcommittee members be listed separately in the subcommittee section of GSA’s Database, even if they were duly appointed members of the parent committee. This policy, in some instances, caused a duplication of entries.

Beginning in fiscal year 2012, DoD will only list in the subcommittee section of GSA’s Database those who are appointed to just a subcommittee. If an individual is appointed to the parent committee and to one of the committee’s authorized subcommittees then his or her subcommittee affiliation will be reflected in the parent committee membership section of GSA’s Database.
