How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) accomplishes its purpose by meeting at least twice annually to discuss issues, develop recommendations, and prepare reports. The Council advises and makes recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Congress on policy matters arising in the administration of Title VIII, including the range of issues relating to the nurse workforce, education, and practice improvement.
How is membership balanced?*Membership of the Council is balanced by incorporating diverse stakeholders from the nursing community. Membership includes: nursing students; public members; practicing professional nurses; leading authorities in various fields of nursing; representatives of higher and secondary education including associate degree schools of nursing; representatives of advanced education nursing groups (such as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists); hospitals; and other institutions and organizations that provide nursing services. The Council communicates diverse perspectives of basic and advanced practice nurses, educators, students, and the public in a wide variety of education and practice areas. Geographic, racial/ethnic, and gender representation are incorporated in the selection of Council members to promote equal voice to members of an increasingly diverse U.S. population.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Council formally convenes at least twice annually. This is relevant and required in order for the council to deliberate and refine the topic to be presented to the Secretary and Congress with accompanying recommendations.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Council is established by statute and provides the Secretary and Congress with expert advice from the nursing academic and practice communities, health care workforce, and the public. Through its annual reports, the Council provides recommendations on current issues regarding nursing workforce, education, and practice which affect the quality and accessibility of healthcare for the Nation.
Why close or partially close meetings? Not applicable. The meetings are open to the public.
Recommendation RemarksThe National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) supports the Department's strategic goals to strengthen the nation’s health and human service infrastructure and workforce and ensure that the nation’s healthcare workforce can meet increased demands. To achieve that goal NACNEP's activities support the Health Resources and Services Administration's efforts to strengthen the healthcare workforce by ensuring the health workforce is trained to provide high quality care that is culturally and linguistically appropriate; increasing the number of practicing health care providers to address shortages, and develop ongoing strategies to monitor, forecast and meet long-term health workforce needs; aligning the composition and distribution of health care providers to best meet the needs of individuals, families and communities; ensuring a diverse health workforce; and supporting the development of interdisciplinary health teams to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care. NACNEP's reports and recommendations support the Division of Nursing in its goal to provide leadership on policies and program initiatives that will promote the supply, skills and distribution of qualified nursing personnel needed to improve the health of the public.
