How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Individual members of the commission serve on various volunteer groups and participate in park – sponsored events throughout the year thus staying abreast of park needs and issues. The Commissioners also communicate directly with the park superintendent both during meetings and individually during the course of the year regarding issues facing the park. Commissioners also frequently communicate to their nominating bodies about actions the park is taking as well as bringing issues and concerns from the nominating bodies to the attention of the full commission and the Department. This is how the Commission provides advice and recommendations to the National Park Service.
How is membership balanced?*The membership is balanced by statute and reflects representation from all of the political jurisdictions along the canal.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Commissioners in attendance at meetings discuss and give opinions on a variety of timely, important and relevant issues facing the park.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Commission continues to be necessary because the park is spread across 19 political jurisdictions. Reductions in park staffing make it increasingly difficult to make substantive connections with these various communities. To compensate it has been increasingly useful to seek advice and counsel from members of the commission.
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings are never closed thus all meetings are open to the public.
Recommendation RemarksThe Commission did not meet in FY 2018. Development of plans for the preservation and use of this park is ongoing.
