How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Carrizo Plain National Monument Advisory Committee (MAC) provided advice and developed recommendations regarding policies, programs, and long-range planning for the management and use of the National Monument. The MAC gathered and analyzed information, heard public testimony, and developed recommendations including, but not limited to, the development and implementation of the Management Plan, establishment of resource management priorities, establishment of landscape goals and objectives, development of ecosystem approaches to management, and support of educational, cultural, recreational, interpretive and volunteer programs.
How is membership balanced?*Members included representatives of the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, the Kern County Board of Supervisors, the Carrizo Native American Advisory Committee, the BLM's Central California Resource Advisory Council, those authorized to graze livestock within the National Monument, and the public-at-large. Members had expertise through education or practical experience in matters relating to the purposes for which the Monument was established, including planning, cultural resource protection, natural resource management, and similar disciplines.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Monument Advisory Committee did not meet in FY2020, but the MAC typically met 2-3 times a year once new members are appointed. MAC meetings generated positive dialogue on issues concerning the Monument, local and statewide constituents, including shared conservation stewardship; recreation and public access; support for local economies and jobs; working landscapes; ongoing land use planning efforts; and energy projects. The involvement and contributions from the Advisory Committee contributed to the successful publication of the approved Carrizo Plain National Monument Resource Management Plan (RMP) in April 2010.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The formation of this committee was required by the Secretary of the Interior after the Carrizo Plain National Monument was established by Presidential Proclamation.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings were open to the public. Notices of the meetings were published in the Federal Register, posted on the BLM California website, and distributed to local newspapers.
Recommendation RemarksThe Carrizo Plain National Monument Advisory Committee terminated on November 1, 2019, pursuant to Executive Order 13875 "Evaluating and Improving the Utility of Federal Advisory Committees", Section 9(a)(2) - Authorized by Agency.
