How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee reviews materials researched and written about Cold War military sites by a consultant (John Salmon) hired by the National Historic Landmarks Program (National Park Service, Department of the Interior). These materials include: an inventory of Cold War sites; a bibliography of Cold War history; and a historic context for a theme study.
How is membership balanced?*Legislation requires that committee members include three experts in Cold War history; one expert in twentieth-century American history; two experts in preservation; and three members of the general public.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Estimated Number of Meetings per Year - 1. The Committee did not meet in FY 2018. The Committee will likely meet via conference call in FY 2019, after its membership is updated, and once Cold War-related work products are ready for Committee review.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This committee provides the National Park Service with access to leading scholars who can ensure that documents submitted by the consultant are accurate and reflect the latest scholarship.

Agency Feedback CommentNot ApplicableNarrative Description*The Committee did not meet in FY 2018, and will likely meet in FY 2019 via conference call after Committee appointments have been updated, and Cold War-related work products are ready for Committee review.Public Law 111-11, Title VII, Subtitle C, Section 7210 of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 authorizes a National Historic Landmark theme study of the sites and resources significant to the Cold War. The Cold War Advisory Committee provides the National Park Service with assistance in locating and assessing Cold War sites to ensure their preservation and protection. The mission of the National Park Service entails cooperation with partners to preserve and protect cultural resources, such as Cold War sites.
