How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Commission provides an open forum for information exchange and public comment on park issues, gains knowledge of these issues and presents park management with recommendations. This helps to bridge relations between the National Park Service, Native Hawaiians, interested parties, and the general public. The park was established to provide a center for the preservation, interpretation, and perpetuation of traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture, and to provide a needed resource for the education, enjoyment and appreciation of the culture. Members of the Commission possess the knowledge and understanding of the Hawaiian culture and have provided invaluable insights for park management to proceed in a effective manner in managing the park.
How is membership balanced?*Membership is as prescribed by the enabling legislation, consisting of 13 members--nine members appointed by the Secretary, and four ex-officio, non-voting members. All nine Secretarial appointees are to be residents of the State of Hawaii, and at least six of those appointees are to be native Hawaiians. Native Hawaiian organizations are invited to nominate members, and at least five members are to be appointed from those nominations. The ex officio members are the Park Superintendent, the National Park Service Hawaii State Director, one person appointed by the Governor of Hawaii, and one person appointed by the Mayor of the County of Hawaii.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Commission met once in FY 2019, and legislatively terminated on December 31, 2018.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Commission was established to advise the Director of the National Park Service with respect to the historical, archaeological, cultural, and interpretive programs of the park; and is to afford particular emphasis to the quality of traditional native Hawaiian culture demonstrated in the park. One of the major tasks of this Commission is to assist park staff with planning for an educational/cultural live-in complex in the park per the General Management Plan. This is a difficult concept as there are no models to follow. Members make meaningful contributions and suggestions as they possess knowledge of the culture (language, customs, traditions, and history) of the area and the park. Also, members are capable of partnering with other community and native Hawaiian organizations to support park goals.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings are open to the public.
Recommendation RemarksThe Commission held its last meeting on Dec. 7, 2018. No new recommendations made in FY 2019.

The Commission's authorization is extended through 2018 under Section 7401 of Omnibus Public Lands Act, March 30, 2009.

Agency Feedback Comment*Periodic email and letter communication with Commission members and at meetings.Narrative Description*The Commission held its last meeting on Dec. 7, 2019, and terminated on Dec. 31, 2018. The law creating Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park mandated the National Park Service to provide a center for the preservation, interpretation, and perpetuation of traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture and to demonstrate historic land use patterns as well as to provide a needed resource for education, enjoyment, and appreciation of such traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture by local residents and visitors. The mission and strategic plan of the National Park Service at Kaloko-Honokohau is rooted in and grows from P.L. 95-625. The Commission was essential to this mission in advising the National Park Service with regard to the historical, archaeological, cultural, and interpretive programs of the park.
