How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*To provide advice on potential future research priorities, the committee organizes itself into working groups to deal with various issues, such as, human resources and diversity, the future of high-speed networking, and other specific matters. All play a role in helping CISE and NSF define a research agenda, and meet the needs for an informed citizenry, priorities for support of the nation's advanced computational and communications structure, and developing a future cadre of scientists and engineers. It reviews performance in proposal processing and substance through review of CISE's committee of visitors (COV) reports and management responses to same.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee is diverse and includes individuals covering all scientific and technical fields falling under CISE. Its membership draws from the academic and industrial communities and represents researchers, creators of technology, and users. Several members have interests and expertise in human resource issues which are particularly important in this new and rapidly evolving field.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings usually are held twice yearly and are scheduled to develop advice closely related to the annual budget and long-range planning processes. The Committee's discussions help clarify major emerging research themes for CISE areas and contribute to priority setting. These are recurring responsibilities which require continual community evaluation and updating.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee has been constituted to reflect the broad range of stakeholders involved. No other balanced forum exists to bring the disparate and complementary viewpoints together for presentation, criticism and synthesis.
