Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee reviews journals that have applied to be indexed in MEDLINE and makes recommendations to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) regarding their scientific quality. The Committee evaluates journals based on 5 critical elements as described on the Journal Selection for MEDLINE page: The Committee reviewed a total of 163 journals in FY 2022 that passed the initial application screening stage. Final statistics regarding MEDLINE journal selection are available publicly:
How is membership balanced?*The Committee consists of members who are knowledgeable in fields such as microbiology, anatomy and neurology, basic sciences, cardiology, dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, library science, molecular biology, nursing, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, physical and rehabilitation medicine, and anesthesiology, whose judgments contribute to the basis on which journal selection decisions are made.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee meets three times a year to review and recommend journals for inclusion in MEDLINE. Three meetings were held during FY 2022, on October 28-29, 2021, February 24-25, 2022, and June 23-24, 2022. The committee plans to hold three meetings in FY2023.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Hundreds of biomedical journals apply to be indexed in MEDLINE annually. It is important to have an impartial committee which is composed of experts in biomedical and behavioral fields and scientific writing to advise the Library on which journals should be indexed to provide accurate, useful research and clinical information, ensuring adequate geographic and subject representation. There is no other NIH group that can provide this impartial journal review.
Why close or partially close meetings? The meetings of the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee were closed to the public for the review and discussion of individual journals for potential inclusion in the NLM publications database. The presence of individuals associated with individual journals could hinder fair and open discussion and evaluation by Committee members, and the meetings were, therefore, closed under Section 552(c)(9)(B) of the Government in the Sunshine Act.
Recommendation RemarksCommittee Function: Other - Journal Review.

The Committee Decision Maker and Designated Federal Official are the same individual based on assigned duties within NLM.

Reports: This committee did not produce any reports.

Dr. Jonathan Eldredge's name was misspelled on the 2021 report, it is the same member for this report.
