How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The COVID-19 pandemic required one meetings in FY 22 be conducted virtually via WebEx and the other in person. The meetings were advertised in the Federal Register and open to the public. Topics presented included the GEC Strategic Plan, recruitment and retention by the Office of Workforce Management Consulting and updates on the Electronic Health Record.

Nine GRECC Subcommittee/GEC site visits were conducted in FY22 at Baltimore, Durham, Pittsburgh, Madison, Puget Sound, New England, Cleveland, Miami, and Little Rock.VA Strategic Goals: Goal 1: Veterans choose VA for easy access, greater choices, and clear information to make informed decisions; Goal 2: Veterans receive timely and integrated care and support that emphasizes their well-being and independence throughout their life journey; Goal 3: Veterans trust VA to be consistently accountable and transparent; Goal 4: VA will modernize systems and focus resources more efficiently to be competitive and to provide World Class capabilities to Veterans and its employees.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee is composed of non-federal members represented by leading medical and allied health experts in the fields of geriatric medicine, psychiatry, psychology, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and education from the non-Federal public and private sectors. Representatives of stakeholder groups (e.g., Veterans services organizations) have membership on the Committee as well. Efforts are made to ensure the membership has suitable diversity through balanced representation by gender, ethnicity, discipline and academic/non-academic status. Occupants of key positions in government agencies that are concerned with aging and health resources serve as ex-officio members.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee generally meets twice a year and has substantive discussions with VA officials concerning development of VA physician and other health professional geriatric leadership, geriatric/gerontological research and geriatric fellowships; reviews proposed legislation and existing and proposed VA- and non-VA programs impacting VA's geriatric and long term care services; and reviews GRECC performance measures.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee represents a unique blend of non-VA academic, clinical, health policy, and research expertise combined with legislatively astute stakeholder/customer perspectives that would not be available through any other means. External review of VA geriatric programs by non-VA experts provides objectivity and broadens VA perspectives.
Why close or partially close meetings? The meetings are open to the public.
Recommendation RemarksPlease note travel for FY2022 is significantly higher than the amount spent in FY 2021 due to the assumed resumption of face to face meetings and postponement of FY21 site visits, which were accomplished in FY22 as travel conditions allowed.
