How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*VA Strategic Goal 1: Veterans choose VA for easy access, greater choices, and clear information to make informed decisions
•Committee Goal 1: Recommend best practices for keeping track of genetic testing data of VHA patients for clinical and research purposes. Best practices could increase the efficiency of genetic testing within the VA by eliminating multiple test orders, increasing the likelihood that the information is easily located and utilized to make treatment decisions, and making data more readily available for VA scientists.

VA Strategic Goal 2: Veterans receive timely and integrated care and support that emphasizes their well-being and independence throughout their life journey—
•Committee Goal 1: Recommend best practices for keeping track of genetic testing data of VHA patients for clinical and research purposes. Best practices could increase genetic testing efficacy and better inform veterans’ health care decisions, especially those with cancer.

VA Strategic Goal 3: Veterans trust VA to be consistently accountable and transparent
•Committee Goal 1: Evaluate the current state of genetic testing and counseling within the VA and identify areas of focus or needs for program expansion. Particularly as it relates to the return of research results and Precision Oncology. The committee would like to make sure that useful genetics information is implemented into health care decision making for all Veterans. To do this, the committee and associated subcommittee we must assess the current state of those services within the VHA and make recommendations for improvement.
Committee Goal 2: Recommend specific tasks and priorities for implementing precision medicine in VHA. The role of precision medicine in VHA could make decisions that will more fully implement genetics into Veterans’ health care. Additionally, make recommendations to facilitate translation genetics research into clinical care
Goal 4: VA will modernize systems and focus resources more efficiently to be competitive and to provide World Class capabilities to Veterans and its employees.

Committee Goal 2: Recommend specific tasks and priorities that will more fully implement genetics into Veterans’ health care
Committee Goal 3: Make recommendations for upcoming VA Data Commons, particularly on the types of data and tools available, user interface, access, and collaborations to increase VA’s data impact. This resource will make VA data more available for research to qualified VA and other researchers, facilitating he advancement of genomics science generally.
How is membership balanced?*Committee membership is balanced to ensure that all affected medical disciplines are represented. Membership includes those who can represent the interests of VA patients, VA employees, and VA medical facility administrators.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee meets usually 2 to 3 times annually. Committee meetings focus on achieving the maximum benefit from VA's precision medicine/genomic medicine. There were no meetings in FY22 because the committee was terminated on June 6, 2022.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is composed partially of private sector professionals who are experts in scientific research and provides a body of expertise that VA does not have now. It is also important to note that the Committee members' breadth of knowledge and experience is a critical component in the establishment of a national VA Genomic Medicine Program, assessing the potential impact of the Program regarding ongoing patient care services and the development of policies and procedures, standards of operation and guidelines consistent with applicable laws relevant to tissue collection, intellectual property rights and patient privacy.
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings are open to the public unless indicated in accordance with the Government in the Sunshine Act.
