How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The VA Prevention of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Advisory Committee advises the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on matters related to identifying, preventing, and mitigating fraud, waste, and abuse in programs similar to those offered by VA in order to improve the integrity of VA’s payments, the efficiency of its programs and activities, and modernizing systems. The committee's efforts focus on the following VA priorities: efficiency to achieve accountability of resources and modernizing systems.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee will be comprised of not more than 12 committee members, who will be appointed by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. A member’s term of service may not exceed 2 years, but the Secretary may reappoint any member for additional terms. The Committee membership will be drawn from various venues and organization types such as Veteran-focused organizations, academic communities, health care providers, insurance providers, other Federal agencies, Federal Inspectors General, Veteran Service Organizations, Military Service Organizations, and leaders of key stakeholder associations and organizations. Members may be Special Government Employees or Regular Government Employees. Committee members will serve as objective advisors, not as representatives of any organizations. The Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Committee will be appointed by the Assistant Secretary for Management and Chief Financial Officer, Office of Management, on behalf of the Secretary, from among the Committee members.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The committee will meet approximately four times per year. In FY 2018, the Committee met four times: November 2017 (Washington DC); January 2018 (Washington DC); May 2018 (Austin TX); and July 2018 (via teleconference)
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The information is provided by individuals with various backgrounds established by the Secretary of the VA to improve and enhance the integrity of VA's programs and activities.
Why close or partially close meetings? The Committee meetings are open to the public, except, when the Committee tours a VA facility, the meeting is closed to protect Veterans’ privacy and personal information.
Recommendation RemarksThe Committee held its first inaugural meeting on November 7, 2017 in Washington, DC.
