How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee will accomplish its purpose through advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on: on how VA can assist and represent Veterans' families, caregivers, and survivors, including expanding services and benefits to Veterans' family members, caregivers, and survivors who are not currently served by VA; on incorporating lessons learned from current, and previous, successful family research and outreach efforts that measure the impact of provided care and benefits services on Veterans' family, caregivers, and/or survivors; on collaborating with family support program within VA and engaging with other VA and non-VA advisory committees focused on specific demographics of Veterans and their families, caregivers, and survivors; on utilizing journey mapping or other means to depict the life experience cycle of families, caregivers, and survivors of Veterans to create a more holistic understanding of important life cycle events and their impacts; and integrating Veterans' families, caregivers, and survivors into key VA strategic initiatives such as access to care, the Mission Act, modernizing systems, suicide prevention, and homelessness.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee was designed to represent all relevant populations (families, caregivers, and survivors) and additionally represents all branches of service, relationships to Veterans, periods of service, race and ethnic groups, and subject matter experts. The Committee is comprised of not more than 20 committee members, who be appointed by the Secretary. The members represent a cross-section of stakeholders that support Veterans' families, survivors, and caregivers. The Committee membership is drawn from various sectors and organizations such as Veteran-focused organizations; military history and academic communities; Veteran Service Organizations; Military Service Organizations; the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs; non-profit, private, and corporate partners; research experts; service providers; Veterans' family members, caregivers, and survivors; and leaders of key stakeholder associations and organizations.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee will meet up two to four times a year. In FY2022, the Committee met virtually March 29, 2022. Additionally, the Families and Caregivers subcommittee had discussions on June 27 and August 4, 2022; and the Survivor subcommittee had discussions on June 27 and July 27, 2022.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*VA only offers limited programs and services to these populations and does not have a direct line to these populations to better understand their need and concerns.
Why close or partially close meetings? The Committee meetings are open to the public except when the Committee is introducing tours of VA facilities or participating in off-site events. When applicable, tours of VA facilities are closed, to protect Veterans' privacy and personal information.
Recommendation RemarksThe Committee held its first inaugural meetings on October 23 and October 24, 2017 in Washington, DC. In November 2018, their first report was submitted with 12 recommendations. In March and September 2019, status of the recommendations was provided. In September 2020, their second report was submitted with 5 recommendations. In March 2021, updates were provided on the 2020 report. During the summer 2021, subcommittees began discussing next suggested recommendations and at the September 23, 2021 Meeting, the full Committee approved seven (7) recommendations to move forward to SECVA. During the March 29, 2022 virtual Meeting, updates were provided to the recommendations.
