How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Delaware Water Gap Citizen Advisory Commission is made up of local residents in the community - businessmen, doctors, professors, school board directors and retirees. This is an advisory commission (not approbatory) that advises park management on local issues and provides feedback on the concerns and expectations of the communities surrounding the recreation area, thereby affecting the planning and development of the park.
How is membership balanced?*Membership on the 11-member Commission is prescribed by the enabling legislation, as follows: (a) two members appointed by the Secretary of the Interior at the Secretary's discretion; (b) two members appointed by the Secretary from among residents of New Jersey nominated by the Governor of New Jersey; (c) two members appointed by the Secretary from among residents of Pennsylvania nominated by the Governor of Pennsylvania; and (d) one member appointed by the Secretary from among the residents of each of the following counties nominated by the county administrator of such county: Sussex County, New Jersey; Warren County, New Jersey; Pike County, Pennsylvania; Monroe County, Pennsylvania; and Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The Commission has several members who favor natural resources and open spaces, and several who favor historic and cultural preservation. There are also some who provide viewpoints toward a balance of the two issues. Several new members favor tourism and have strong feelings toward preserving the recreation area as a major draw for visitors to the Pocono region.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*No meetings were held in FY 2011. Committee is currently inactive.Meetings are held in such a way as to allow members and the public to raise issues of concerns, and a chance for the Park Service to directly respond to those concerns. There is also a Superintendent's report of park happenings and isses, and two public comment periods. All concerned have an opportunity to make their feelings and preferences known to Commission members and park staff. Meetings are attended by the Park Superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent, the Superintendent's Secretary (as recorder), the Management Assistant, and staff members as appropriate to provide information on the item of discussion/review. Preparation for the meetings includes developing PowerPoint presentations on park events, issues, and information asked for at the previous meetings. Commission correspondence is tracked and answered, minutes are transcribed, by the Superintendent's secretary.Commission terminated October 31, 2008. Legislation pending to extend commission for one year.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Commission meetings provide a means for Commission members, park staff, and concerned public citizens to meet face to face to discuss park projects and issues. Some regular attendees, both Commission members and public, routinely challenge park staff on issues such as visitor safety, care of historic structures, management of wildlife, and other services for the visitors, forcing park staff to think outside the box when planning and/or carrying out programs. Attendess and members often present opposing viewpoints, helping park staff to make compromises between the two (or somethimes three) extremes.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings are open.
Recommendation RemarksNo meetings were held in FY 2011. Committee is currently inactive.

Commission was authorized by P.L. 100-573, October 31, 1988. Sec. 5- Termination of Commission states: The Commission shall terminate on the date that is 10 years after the date of the enactment of this Act. Commission was reauthorized by P.L. 105-355, which states: Section 5 of P.L. 101-573 is amended by striking "10" and inserting "20".

Commission terminated October 31, 2008. Legislation proposed to extend commission for one year.

No meetings were held in FY 2009.
