Agency Feedback CommentNANarrative Description*The goal of the NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold. The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by utilizing the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The committee which is chaired by the Director of NCI, served as the official channel through which the findings and recommendations of various planning and advisory groups are submitted to the NCI leadership for consideration. Appointed members of the ACD include the Chairs of the following chartered NCI advisory committees: the President's Cancer Panel; the National Cancer Advisory Board; the Boards of Scientific Counselors; the Board of Scientific Advisors, the Director’s Consumer Liaison Group, and the Clinical Trials and Translational Research Advisory Committee respectively. With the recent appointment of a new NCI Director, the need for future ACD meetings is not necessary. In the past, the Advisory Committee to the Director, has met its mission by establishing several Progress Review Groups (PRG) to review and provide input on issues related to specific cancer types such as lung, kidney and bladder, and sarcoma cancers. Additionally, the ACD has established PRGs that are population-focused such as the Trans-HHS Cancer Health Disparities PRG and the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology (AYAO) PRG. The ACD has had face-to-face meetings or teleconferences that are open to the public.
