How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The purpose of the Expert Panel is to provide an objective review of PEPFAR’s PMTCT activities, and provide recommendations to the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and the appropriate Congressional committees for scale-up of services to achieve the ambitious target of reaching 80 percent of pregnant women in countries most affected by HIV/AIDS in which the U.S. has HIV/AIDS programs. This report will be considered by Congress and the Executive Branch as they guide the program.
How is membership balanced?*The membership of the Expert Panel is set by law and balanced with both US government representation from PEPFAR implementing agencies, as well as field representation from Ministries of Health, multilateral organizations, and PEPFAR implementing partners.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*One meeting January 9, 2009. No subsequent meetings. The meeting was highly relevant to the Committee's work because it generated the information needed for the report.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Expert Panel was created by law to serve the U.S. Government by providing an objective review of activities to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It provided a report with recommendations for scale-up of prevention of mother-to-child transmission services to the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and the appropriate congressional committees

This committee, and the report it generated, serve to stimulate changes in our programs that have made them more effective and efficient as they strive to prevent vertical transmission of HIV and treat mothers and children living with HIV.
