How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee offered recommendations on issues agreed upon by the Committee or identified by the DFO that were related to the consideration of democracy promotion in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy and foreign assistance. The Committee provided these recommendations to the Secretary of State, the Director of Foreign Assistance, the Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, and the Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.
How is membership balanced?*The former members of the Committee included former U.S. government officials, not-for-profit non-governmental organizations, public policy organizations, academic institutions, and other experts on foreign policy or development issues related to democracy promotion. The composition of the Committee was balanced in terms of the points of view represented.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The committee did not meet during the FY 2010 year.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*An advisory committee is an important mechanism to provide the advice and counsel necessary to increase the impact of U.S. policy and development assistance with respect to democracy promotion. The purpose of the Committee was to provide a formal channel for consultation with non-government individuals and groups with expertise in the promotion of democracy. The Committee advised the Secretary of State and the Administrator of the Agency for International Development on efforts to promote democracy and democratic transition in connection with the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy and foreign assistance.
