How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Council meetings provide a public forum through which the identification and recommendation of goals and objectives are made for the work year, and issues and concerns about past or present plans are discussed.The Council held its last meeting October 23, 2008. A final report will be submitted following this meeting.
How is membership balanced?*As prescribed by the enablng legislation, the Council is not to exceed 35 members appointed by the Secretary of the Interior and composed of (a) the head or a designee of each Federal department or independent agency administering lands through which the trail passes; (b) a member appointed to represent each State through which the trail passes (Alabama), and such appointments are made from recommendations of the Governor(s) of such State(s); and (c) one or more members appointed to represent private organizations, including corporate and individual landowners and land users, which in the opinion of the Secretary have an established and recognized interest in the trail, and such appointments are made from recommendations of the heads of such organizations.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Council generally meets twice a year. Council meetings provide a forum which encourages fairness and understanding, and the atmosphere for group consensus and partnership.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail Advisory Council has been established pursuant to the National Trails System Act to consult with the Secretary of the Interior on the development of a comprehensive plan and other matters relating to the trail, including the selection of rights-of-way, standards for erection, and maintenance of markers. Also, the trail has been designated as an All American Road by the Federal Highway Administration.

Agency Feedback CommentThe Agency has reviewed possible locations for the Interpretive Center and has worked with the Council regarding the advantages and disadvantagous of various proposed locations. The Agency has provided examples of current NPS designated parkways and answered various questions related to parkways. The Agency has also outlined the various steps necessary for the trail to obtain parkway status.Narrative Description*The Council held its final meeting in FY 2009 on October 23, 2008.
