How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The committee was composed of 16 members that conducted a scientific overview of NIH funded research and research-related activities in digestive diseases and identified recent research advances and new and emerging opportunities for future research.
How is membership balanced?*The committee was composed of 16 scientific and public members with a broad diversity of scientific and professional experience and who are knowledgeable about digestive diseases as members of the academic or medical research and practice communities involved in digestive diseases research, including individuals in allied health specialties relevant to digestive diseases research and individuals who have close personal or family experience with digestive diseases or experience with patient oriented organizations in digestive diseases. In addition, there were 18 ex-officio members from 14 institutes and centers within NIH and other government agencies dealing with digestive diseases.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The mission of the National Commission on Digestive Diseases is complete. No additional meetings are planned.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This Commission conducted an overview of the state-of-the-science in the field of digestive diseases research and developed a long-range plan for digestive diseases research consistent with the research mission of the NIH. The advice from this committee cannot be obtained from other sources because the complex nature of research and research program emphasis requires a specialized balance and breadth of expertise not available on the NIH staff or from other established sources.

Agency Feedback CommentNANarrative Description*The goal of NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold. The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by charging the National Commission on Digestive Diseases to conduct an overview of the state-of-the-science in the field of digestive diseases research and develop a long-range plan for digestive diseases research consistent with the research mission of the NIH.
