How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Board serves in the public interest as a scientific advisory body to the Director, AFIP, to provide him and his staff with scientific, professional advice and guidance in matters pertaining to operational programs, policies, and procedures of the AFIP for DoD and other federal agencies with responsibilities for consultation, education, and research in pathology. With the endorsement of the SAB, the AFIP has expanded its efforts in medical and molecular genetics, DNA technology and response, significantly improved the consultation case turn around time, upgraded the productivity and quality of the research and accessioning activities, and continue to monitor the environmental programs and Gulf War Illness Registry.
How is membership balanced?*The members of the Scientific Advisory Board represent distinguished scientists of the highest order in the broad range of the 29 registries of pathology. The members are drawn from throughout the country, from the medical academic community, from staff of prominent private and public hospitals, and from the federal sector. In addition, top military researchers from each of the services are included to ensure military-relevant problems are discussed.

Recommendation RemarksThe committee does not submit separate reports to the decision maker; their recommendations are contained in their meeting minutes, which are forwarded to the decision maker for action.

Notwithstanding, this committee conducted no meetings in fiscal year 2006 and is being considered for termination by the Agency or consolidation under the DoD Health Services Board.
