How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Klamath Fishery Management Council (KFMC) fulfills its purpose under the Klamath River Basin Fishery Resources Restoration Act by making salmon harvest recommendations to the Pacific Fishery Management Council, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Fish and Game Commission, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Yurok Tribal Council and/or Hoopa Valley Tribal Council. Each year the KFMC's Technical Advisory Team assembles fishery data and prepares technical reports that are provided to both the KFMC and the Pacific Fishery Management Council. The KFMC reviews the technical data, negotiates a fishery management package that satisfies all of its members, and approves it by consensus. It then recommends this management package to the above-mentioned agencies.
How is membership balanced?*The 11 members represent ocean commercial fishing, ocean recreational fishing, in-river recreational fishing, two tribal fishing groups, two federal agencies, and two state agencies (from Oregon and California). Membership is established by law.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings are held four times per year, or on an as needed basis. The meetings are held at important points in the annual cycle of salmon management. A fall meeting is held during the fall salmon run. A February meeting coincides with the announcement of salmon population projections for the upcoming year. March and April meetings are held in conjunction with meetings of the Pacific Fishery Management Council in order to participate in planning salmon harvest management for the upcoming fishing season.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The KFMC is considered uniquely knowledgeable on Klamath issues. It is the only forum that brings together stakeholders, agencies, and interested parties to focus on the harvest management of Klamath anadromous fish. The Klamath River Basin Fishery Resources Restoration Act directs that the Klamath Fishery Management Council advise on harvest management issues affecting anadromous fish of the Klamath River Basin.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings are open to the public
