How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*PITAC provides the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) through the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) with advice and information on high-performance computing and communications, information technology, and the next generation Internet, through public meetings, subcommittee meetings, and the preparation of reports that commonly contain findings and recommendations.
How is membership balanced?*Per the Executive Order, the Committee consists of not more than 30 non-federal members appointed by the President, including representatives of the research, education, and library communities, network providers, and representatives from critical industries.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings are held approximately quarterly. Meetings serve as an important mechanism for obtaining input from experts and the general public.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*No other forum provides the President with an independent assessment of Federal R&D in information technology.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksPITAC terminated on 6/1/05 under its last amending EO 13305, and was not renewed by the President. The recent Continuation EO essentially transferred PITAC functions to PCAST (OSTP # 1228).

The most direct and concrete feedback is specific action in response to recommendations (e.g., the implementation of Recommendation 4 in the Cyber Security report). Feedback also occurs through formal communication at public meetings from Government officials. Informal feedback also takes place through e-mail and other channels.Narrative Description*PITAC provides independent reviews of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program. These reviews provide the basis for assessing whether the research and development undertaken is helping to maintain U.S. leadership in advanced computing and communications technologies and their applications. Based on PITAC reviews, revisions in the NITRD Program may be initiated.
