How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee was formed to develop a proposed safety standard for cranes and derricks in construction through face-to-face negotiations. The Committee was responsible for attempting to reach a consensus on a proposed occupational safety standard governing worker safety with respect to cranes and derricks in construction. Its duties included identifying the key issues,gauging their importance and analyze the information necessary to resolve the issues. The Committee was to develop the regulatory text. In fact, a draft document - the C-DAC consensus document - was finalized July 9, 2004.
How is membership balanced?*The committee was composed of members who represented the following interests: crane and derrick manufacturers, structural and architectutal engineering firms and engineeering consultants involved with the use of crane and derricks in construction, training organizations, crane and derrick operator testing organizations, and public interest groups.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*11 Meetings were held in FY 2004
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*It is essential that the Department revise its safety standards for cranes and derricks in construction. There is currently no advisory committee available who has the knowledge and expertise available to develop this proposed safety standard
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings were open to public and public was invited to participate.

Agency Feedback Comment*Under the ground rules, if the agency alters consensus-based language, the Agency will provide the members with written explanation.Narrative Description*OSHA is statutorily committed to improving workplace safety for every working man and woman by reducing the number of occupational safety and health hazrds at their places of employment. OSHA's strategic plan calls for reducing construction fatalities and improving its safety standards as one method of attaining that goal.
