How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The purpose of the Task Force is to advise the National Park Service and make recommendations for suggested improvements to the Chalmette Battlefield site within Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The Task Force will only review the condition of federally-owned facilities and artifacts within the boundary of the Chalmette National Cemetery and Chalmette Battlefield units of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Recommendations of the Task Force should address non-Federal cost sharing. The Task Force recommendations will be analyzed and a plan of action developed.
How is membership balanced?*The 12 members of the Chalmette Battlefield Task Force represent the Louisiana Society of U.S. Daughters of 1812; St. Bernard Parish Government; Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office; Lake Borgne Port & Harbor Terminal District; St. Bernard Parish Government & Tourisim Industry; St. Bernard Parish Council; St. Bernard Historical Society; New Orleans Regional Chamber of Commerce; Jackson Barracks Unit of the Louisiana Army National Guard; Fanendeville Decendents, and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Six meeetings were held in fiscal year 2003. Two meetings were site visits at the battlefield and cemetery. The site visits provided an opportunity for task force members, park staff and members of the public to observe and discuss issues and conditions of the battlefield and cemetery. All meetings are attended by appointed Task Force members, the Designated Federal Officer, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve management staff, and members of the public.The Task Force continued to meet bi-monthly in fiscal year 2004 until August, 2004 when the committee submtted its final report and was terminated.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Chalmette Battlefield Task Force is made up of local residents of the community, businessmen, and retirees. Task Force meetings provide a means for members, park staff, and concerned public citizens to meet face to face to discuss park projects and issues. The Purpose of the Task Force is to advise the National Park Service on the recommendations for suggested improvements to the Chalmette Battlefield site within Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The Task Force will review the conditon of only federally-owned buildings and artifacts within the boundary of the Chalmette National Cemetery and Chalmettte Battlefield units of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Recommendation of the Task Force address non-Federal cost sharing. The task Force recommendations were analyzed and a plan of action developed.
Why close or partially close meetings?All meetings were open to the public and are announced in the Federal Register.
Recommendation RemarksThe Chalmette Battlefield Task Force was established by authority of the Secretary of the Interior under Section 3 c) of Public Law 91-383, August 3, 1970 (16 U.S.C. 1a-2(c)). The Task Force is subject to the Provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), 5 U.S.C. Appendix and shall take no action unless the charter filing requirements of Sections 9 and 14(b) of the Act have been complied with. The Task Force is subject to biennial review and will terminate 2 years from the date of the charter is filled, unless, prior to that time the charter is renewed in accordance with Section 14 of FACA. The 12 members of the committee were appointed by the Secretary of the Interior for terms until 8/23/2004.

The committee submitted a final report to the FDO on 08/23/04.

An action plan was produced by NPS to document current and future implementation measures. The action plan provides methods that will allow committee members and other stakeholders to track progress on future implementation actions in subsequent planning documents. Action Plan Document is posted to this web site with the Task Force Final Report.
