Legislation StatusPending
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*FY 2003 - Commission terminated March 3, 2002. Legislation to reauthorize the Commission for additional 10 years is pending in Congress. The Commission was established to consult with the Secretary of the Interior, or Designee, in respect to the development, management, and interpretation of Manzanar National Historic Site. These topics were discussed at the two Commission meetings that were held in FY2001.The Commission held one meeting in FY2002. The meeting was held October 2001 prior to the sunset of the Commission. Legislation to reauthorize the Commission for an additional 10 years in pending before Congress.
How is membership balanced?*Commission members were selected from among former internees (4), Native Americans (2), local residents (3), and members of the general public (2). Each member brings a point of view representing his/her constituent group and participates fully in discussing issues relating to planned park development.A new Manzanar Advisory Commission will be named by the Secretary of the Interior after the Commission is reauthorized.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings are scheduled for 2-3 times per year. Commission members actively participate in planning activities for the management and interpretation of the site. The Commission has proven invaluable to the National Park Service staff in accomplishing the development of this new unit of the NPS.As noted above, no Commission meetings have or will be scheduled until the Commission is reauthorized.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*NPS policy and Federal law require frank and open public participation in the planning process for all units of the NPS. The establishment of this Commission, from a broad spectrum of public groups and interests, has proven to be an efficient and economical method of achieving this requirement.
Why close or partially close meetings? No meetings have been closed.
Recommendation RemarksThe current term of the Manzanar Advisory Commission expired March 03, 2002. Legislation to authorize the Commission thru March 03, 2012 is pending before Congress.

(1) Re #6 (EXPECTED CHARTER RENEWAL DATE) -- The FACA Section 14(b) biennial rechartering requirement has been waived for the Commission pursuant to P.L. 102-525, October 26, 1992.
