How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The board provides advice to the Secretary by consensus of its members in the development of a management plan for the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The eight board members, representing a range of scientific disciplines, including the physical, biological, and social sciences,visit the monument and meet approximately two-to-four times a year to discuss monument issues. Since its establishment the Board has issued 27 advisories useful in the development of the monument management plan
How is membership balanced?*The members on the board represent a range of scientific disciplines, especially as outlined in the President's Proclamation. The Secretary, working with the National Academy of Sciences recommendations, selects members representing the necessary range of discipline and expertise to provide sound scientific advice.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*One meeting was held in this reporting period and two meetings were held last reporting period. The meeting for this year discussed Board's comments on the draft environmental impact statement for the Giant Sequoia Natinal Monument. Last year, the meetings were for the purpose of providing committee advice on proposed actions, significant issues, alternatives and environmental effects in the development of the draft environmental impact statement.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Proclamation 7295 establishing the Giant Sequoia National Monument directed the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a scientific advisory board to advise the Secretary on scientific issues during the development of the initial Giant Sequoia National Monument management plan.
