How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Cancer Advisory Panel for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAPCAM) assessed complementary and alternative medicine interventions for cancer, determined potential research opportunities, and recommended mechanisms for further research of promising approaches. This Panel of experts represented a vital step toward rigorously evaluating the efficacy and safety of various complementary and alternative medicine cancer therapies that demonstrate the potential for helping to reduce the burden of this disease. CAPCAM has reviewed one best case series in FY2002, as well as provided comments on PDQ summary sheets. The National Advisory Council for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine will review and provide advice on these areas in the future.
How is membership balanced?*The CAPCAM consisted of 15 appointed members. Eleven members were nonfederal and 4 were Federal members. Nonfederal members were selected based on knowledge in the fields of complementary and alternative therapeutic cancer treatments or experience in clinical trials, biostatistics, oncology, mediation, pathology, radiology, and/or bioethics.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The CAPCAM met one time during FY 02. CAPCAM provided advice regarding the review and assessment of summaries of evidence for complementary and alternative medicine cancer intervention clinical trials submitted by practitioners, evaluation on whether and how these interventions should be followed up and identified future alternative and complementary cancer clinical trials initiatives.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The CAPCAM was terminated on August 30, 2002. Staff at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services have determined that the functions of this committee can be assumed by the National Advisory Council for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.
