How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Advisory Committee for Energy-Related Epidemiologic Research (ACERER) was established to provide advice and make recommendations to the Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); the Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); and Administrator, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), on establishment of a research agenda and the conduct of a research program pertaining to energy-related epidemiologic studies.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee consisted of 15 public members, including the Chair. Members were selected by the Secretary, HHS, from authorities knowledgeable in the fields of energy-related epidemiologic research and public health, including occupational and environmental health; representatives of public interest groups; and representatives of affected parties (e.g., workers, energy development advocates, and community residents). The Committee also consisted of three nonvoting ex officio members, designees of: The Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety and Health, DOE; the Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management, DOE; the Director, National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes for Health, HHS; and such additional officers of the U.S. Government that the Secretary, HHS, deemed necessary for the Committee to effectively carry out its function.

Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This committee did not meet in FY 2002. The Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the recommendation that the Advisory Committee for Energy-Related Epidemiologic Research be terminated effective February 28, 2002.
