How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The American Samoa Economic Advisory Commission meets to analyze information gathered by staff, hear public comments and views, and in an advisory capacity, develop recommendations regarding the economic development of American Samoa. The Commission submits its recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior in a report. The Secretary may transmit it, along with any comments he deems necessary, to the President. If the President agrees with the report, he may transmit it with any comments to the President of the U.S. Senate and the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
How is membership balanced?*The Commission is composed of six members and one ex-officio member, representing three categories - two Federal government officials, two members who represent the financial, business, or trade community, and two members representing local area interests. The ex-officio member is the territorial Delegate to the U. S. House of Representatives.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Commission meetings will be called by the Chairman as often as deessary, but no less than one meeting will be held annually.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*American Samoa does not have sufficient local revenues to fund its entire operating costs. It desperately needs exteranl expertise in economic development to help provide its citizens with new ideas and incentives to assist rejuvenate its stagnant and limited economy. Since there is no existing advisory committee designed to do this work, the establishment of the American Samoa Economic Advisory Commission would be the best way to provide a centralized forum for this type of discourse.
Why close or partially close meetings? All commission meetings are opened to the public and notices of meetings will be posted in the Federal Register.
