How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee provides valuable, independent advice to the Department of Energy on the Nonproliferation and National Security program on complex scientific and technical issues that arise in the planning, management, and implementation of the program, including advice on the strategic long-term planning necessary for establishing research priorities, proper program balance, research program priorities, new opportunities, and identifying the appropriate approaches for interlaboratory and industrial participation. The Committee accomplishes these goals through analysis of current research programs and future plans.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee members are selected to assure well-balanced representation from the national laboratories, industry, and universities involved in support of U.S. Government programs in nonproliferation. Particular attention was paid to obtaining diversity and a balance of technical disciplines, interests, points of view, and geography.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee meets at least three times per year. The agenda of the meetings relate specifically to active programs and future plans of the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. The Committee meets to provide timely advice and recommendations to the DOE Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee provides valuable recommendations related to the conduct of the Department of Energy programs in nonproliferation and national security. The Committee is the most effective means for the Department of Energy to continue obtaining timely, balanced, and informed advice on matters concerning the quality and balance of the Department's wide-ranging nonproliferation programs. The broad range of scientific expertise and overarching experience of the Committee members is not available within the Department of Energy or within its existing committees.
Why close or partially close meetings? Some meetings of the Committee are closed because the meeting will involve discussion of restricted data and/or classified information specifically required by statute and/or Executive Order to be kept secret in the interest of national security.
