How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The DHHS established the National Toxicology Program on November 15, 1978, to strengthen the Department activities in the testing of chemicals of public health concern as well as in the development and validation of new and better integrated test methods. On April 15, 1998, the Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (Center) was established to support Federal Agencies by coordinating and facilitating the review and adoption of toxicological test methods of multi-agency interest as well as encourage participation and communication with other stakeholders throughout the process of test method development and validation. The Advisory Committee on Alternative Toxicological Methods (ACATM) was established to advise the Center and the Director of the Environmental Toxicology Program on the activities and directives both present and future, as they relate to the Center, including advice on fostering interaction with all stakeholders.
How is membership balanced?*Members are selected from recognized authorities knowledgeable in academia, industry, and public interest organizations, and may include representation from federal and state government agencies and the international community, as appropriate.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings shall be held approximately three times a year. These meetings are open to the public and there is opportunity for public input to the ACATM on agenda topics. During the past year, the Committee heard comprehensive presentations on and discussed: (1) a revised Up-and-Down Procedure for Assessing Acute Oral Toxicity; 2) an overview or the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay - Xonopus (FETAX) procedure and database; and 3) a report on the International Workshop on In Vitro Methods for Assessing Acute Systemic Toxicity.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Advisory Committee on Alternative Toxicological Methods provides review and advice on activities of the Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods, including advice on fostering interaction with all stakeholders. Outside advice by an officially chartered committee becomes key to the acceptance and the level of trust by the scientific and public communities, and to the broadening of partnerships beyond government.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
