How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*In 1999 six public listening sessions were held, over sixty experts on American production agriculture and more than 300 concerned citizens involved in agriculture gave their testimony to the Commission. In May 1999 the Commission released its interim report and currently is preparing its final report of recommendations for the role of government in production agriculture in the 21st century. This report will be presented to both the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.
How is membership balanced?*Of the eleven Commissioners, four were appointed by each the House and Senate Agriculture Committee chairperson in consultation with the ranking minority member and three were appointed by the President. The Commissioners come from eleven different states and represent a wide range of participation in American production agriculture.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The meetings of the Commission are held quarterly with additional working sessions scheduled as needed. The meetings provide the Commission with the opportunity to become informed on the various economic and policy issues, discuss the options and consequences for alternative policy and programs and to form a consensus of recommendations.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Commission was legislated in the 1996 Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act (FAIR) to provide objective input into policy-making process.
Why close or partially close meetings? The meetings of the Commission are open to the public.
Recommendation RemarksCommission has two statutory charges: (1) An initial assessment of the changes since the 1996 FAIR Act , and (2) an assessment of the role of government in agriculture in the next century. The first task is near completion and hearings will be conducted in the fall of 1999 to begin work on the second task.
