How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*This Committee has had a very specific mission: To provide a report to the Congress and President recommending Federal water policy for the next 30 years by October 2, 1997. The deadline was met when the Commission agreed on a draft final report in September, 1997, and issued the report for a 60 day public comment period. On February 19,1998, the Commission met and approved the report as modified following consideration of public comments.
How is membership balanced?*There are currently nine Presidentially appointed members and twelve ex-officio members of Congress. The appointees include the Secretary of the Army and the Secretary of the Interior, and a philosophically and ethnically diverse group of academicians, lawyers, a rancher, and a high ranking Government executive. The Members of Congress are the Chairs and Ranking Minority members of water resource management and appropriations Senate and House committees.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Commission held its final meeting February 19, 1998, its only meeting in Fiscal Year 1998.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This Commission was established by Congress to provide a broad spectrum, deliberate, and intensive expert review of water policy views from all sectors of the western states' economy and public interests, and to recommend innovative strategies for the future. The mission has been completed and the Commission will be terminated September 30, 1998.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksCommission published its final report in June, 1998. Copies are being distrubuted in September, 1998, and report is available on website: www.den.doi.gov/wwprac.
