How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee published its report in June 1998, VA Long-Term Care at the Crossroads: The Report of the Federal Advisory Committee on the Future of Long-Term Care. The report contains an analysis of the options facing VA in long-term care and makes 20 recommendations. Two recommendations address care delivery and management structures. Three recommendations highlight strategic planning. Nine recommendations focus on current services, particularly, alternative investment and improved fairness in access to care. Three recommendations call for legislative relief and three more address information systems, research and education. In addition, the committee suggested 4 ideas for management performance linked to VHA's domains of value: access to care; cost/price; quality/functional status; and, patient satisfaction. The Committee's report has been released for comment. The Under Secretary for Health has appointed the leadership of a workgroup to review and integrate stakeholder's comments and to develop action plans for each recommendation. This task will be completed by January 31, 1999.
How is membership balanced?*The committee membership represents various constituencies served by VA Long Term care programs including veteran service organizations, nursing home corporations, and university-based academic communities. Within that context, the balance of the committee composition will be maintained through geographical, ethnic minority, and women representation.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee met twice during FY 1998 and completed its charge in June 1998.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The membership of the committee represent the best information from leaders in the long-term care field. While this expertise exists in the international community, there is no evidence to presume it would be superior.
