How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Council recommended actions to help preserve trail resources, improve working relationships with trail partners and others; recognized outstanding contributors to the trail; and improved quality at specific trail project sites. The Council reviewed and commented on several planning and research documents, route location issues, and draft publications, vastly improving the accuracy and content of the finished product..
How is membership balanced?*As prescribed in the enabling legislation, the Council was comprosed of (1) the head (or designee) of each Federal department or independent agency administering lands through which the trail route passes; (2) a member representing each State through which the trail passes (appointed from recommendations of the Governors of such States); and (3) one or more members representing private organizations, including corporate and individual landowners and land users, that in the opinion of the Secretary of the Interior, have an established and recognized interest in the trail (appointed from recommendations of the heads of such organizations).
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*One annual meeting was generally sufficient to review the past year's performance, identify goals and objectives and collectively address special issues or concerns of the public.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Santa Fe Nartional HistoricTrail Advisory Council statutorily terminated this fiscal year. The Council was established by the Congress to consult with the Secretary of the Interior regarding matters relating to the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, including selection of rights-of-way, standards for the erection and maintenance of markers along the trail, the administration of the trail, and the development of a comprehensive plan for management and use of the trail.
