How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee is legislatively mandated to provide advice and guidance to the Secretary of Agriculture on matters relating to tribal and Indian affairs. How the Committee will meet this function is mandated under the Committee's authorizing language (7 U.S.C. 6921(b)(4)), including through the provision of recommendations to the Secretary on how to improve the efficacy of programs and services in Indian Country.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee is required under its authorizing legislation to provide for diversity across geography, Indian tribes, and the agriculture industry (7 U.S.C. 6921(b)(3)(C)). Equal opportunity practices in accordance with USDA will also be followed. USDA will, to the extent possible, provide for representation across individuals with demonstrated ability to represent minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee is legislatively mandated to provide for a minimum of two meetings per year (7 U.S.C. 6921(b)(3)(F)). USDA anticipates the Tribal Advisory Committee convening quarterly.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Tribal Advisory Committee is required, by law, to facilitate but not supplant the government-to-government consultation process between the Department of Agriculture and Indian tribes. (7 U.S.C. 6921(b)(2)(B)).
