Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The duties of the Committee are solely advisory in nature, and include:
• Periodic, independent reviews of elements of the Department of Energy (DOE) Isotope Program (DOE IP) and recommendations based on those assessments for more effective mission execution and mission readiness.
• Providing advice on priorities and strategies, and development of long-range plans, to address more effectively the needs for stable and radioactive isotopes for research and applications that are critical to the Nation and in short supply.
• Providing advice on appropriate levels of funding to develop those plans, priorities, and strategies and to help maintain appropriate balance among elements of the DOE IP.
• Providing advice on national policy and scientific issues related to isotope production, research and development that are of concern to the DOE and the Nation, as requested by the Secretary of Energy or the Director, Office of Science.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee will consist of approximately 20 members. The membership of the Committee will be carefully considered in order to be balanced in terms of views represented and functions to be performed, per FACA, and to obtain diversity, equity , and inclusion with a balance of disciplines, experiences, points of view, and geography. The employers of the members include academia, research institutions, private industry, National Laboratories, and the Federal government. The members will be nominated by peers and recommended by DOE technical staff. Expert members are appointed as special Government employees (SGEs), regular Government employees (RGEs), and ex-officio members. In addition, representatives of national professional organizations, international partners in isotope science and technology, nuclear engineering, physics, nuclear and radiochemistry, medicine, national security, business practices; and other entities, including research facilities and academic institutions, may be appointed, as appropriate, should the Committee’s function benefit from such representation. The Committee’s membership balance is not static and may change depending on DOE’s charges to the Committee.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee will meet, approximately two to three times a year
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is established pursuant to the provisions of section 10110 of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (Public Law 117-167)
Why close or partially close meetings?
Recommendation RemarksThe committee did not meet in FY 2024 as the Department is still trying to determine next steps to form the committee.
