How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The purpose of the Advisory Committee for Science Quality and Integrity (Committee) is to advise the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Director (USGS Director) on the operations of the USGS Office of Scientific Quality and Integrity (OSQI). The Committee reports to the Secretary through the USGS Director or the Designated Federal Officer (DFO), as described in the Committee’s Charter.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee shall comprise no more than 15 members who represent the diversity of the Nation’s constituencies, and include the following interests:
• Local and state governments
• Non-governmental organizations
• Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian organizations, including
representatives from tribal governments and tribal colleges
• Academia
• Other sectors and stakeholders, including private industry

The Committee may include scientific experts and will include rotating representation from one or more local, tribal, state, regional, and/or national organizations. Alternate members may be appointed to the Committee. Alternate members must be approved and appointed by the USGS Director before attending meetings as representatives. Alternate members shall have experience and/or expertise similar to the primary member.

Stakeholders and the general public are invited to submit new member and alternate nominees in response to a call for nominations notice published in the Federal Register. Members are selected to ensure adequate representation from each group listed above. Relevant experience and
expertise are evaluated in the selection of candidates. Additional considerations are given in the selection of members to ensure geographic diversity.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee will meet approximately one to two times annually, and at such other times as designated by the DFO.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Committee members represent the range of users of the scientific information developed and provided by the USGS. Input from these stakeholders will ensure 1) high standards of scientific quality and integrity in USGS science activities, programs, and products, and 2) USGS research products and scientific information are presented and delivered in a credible, trusted, and useful form. The Committee often addresses complex issues through collaboration, which typically improves overall solutions and reduces the potential for future conflict. With this level of review and involvement, the Committee can provide well-informed recommendations to the USGS Director regarding the operations of OSQI.

Integrity and reliability of scientific information is crucial for ensuring that managers across the country are equipped with sound information needed to reduce risks to resources. Transparency is a crucial component of both ensuring scientific quality and being responsive to the information needs of decision makers at the local, state, tribal, regional, and national level. The Committee provides a transparent and public forum with opportunities for public involvement and input.
