How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee shall identify permitting and other challenges and successes that permitting authorities and project developers and operators face in permitting projects in an efficient, orderly, and responsible manner; improve the performance of the permitting process and regional coordination for the purpose of promoting the efficient, orderly, and responsible development of carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) projects and carbon dioxide pipelines; and provide advice and recommendations to the Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and the Secretary of Energy on these subjects.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee shall be composed of members who participate as experts in their respective fields, who will serve as special Government employees; members who represent state, local and Tribal governments or private organizations; and Regular Government Employees, serving in their official capacities.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee shall meet as frequently as needed and approved by the DFO, and not less than twice each year. To the maximum extent practicable, the Committee shall meet collectively, not less than once a year, with any other task force organized under the USE IT Act.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This statutorily-mandated CCUS Task Force is comprised of individuals who bring together unique perspectives and expertise relating to carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration. It is a formal, continuing, statutory body which provides advice to the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management.

Agency Feedback Comment*Feedback will be provided to the committee during regular meetings and posted on the committee's Web page.Narrative Description*On October 31, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote cooperative efforts between CEQ and DOE to establish, maintain, and manage two carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) Permitting Task Forces and clarify the agencies’ respective roles in administering the Task Forces. In accordance with the MOU, the two Task Forces were established pursuant to the USE IT Act. The purpose of each Task Force is the same, but the scope differs by geographical area – one Task Force focuses on Federal lands and the Outer Continental Shelf, and the other focuses on non-Federal lands.
