How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*	The National Advisory Council on Indian Education (NACIE) advises the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Interior provides recommendations to Congress on American Indian and Alaska Native education issues for which the ED Secretary has authority. The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education funds the administration and travel costs of Council members.
How is membership balanced?*	NACIE members represent the broad spectrum of Indian communities across the country. Some committee members live in traditional settings on reservations while others reside in urban settings, similar to Indian students attending public and tribal schools. Most NACIE members work in education-related jobs from pre-school to higher and adult education.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*	NACIE met twice times during 2024. Each meeting was published in the Federal Register and had a fully approved agenda.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*	The Council was initially created in 1972 under the Indian Education Act to advise the Secretary of Education on the administration of all education programs benefiting Indian children and adults as well as funding levels for those programs. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), 20 U.S.C. §7471. NACIE members are from different tribes and geographic regions across the country and represent the needs and interests of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples.
