Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The committee meets twice each year and uses a varied format that includes full committee discussion and working group sessions focused on specific issues of mutual concern to the community, directorate and agency. Areas of emphasis at NSF are broadening participation, integration of research and education, cyberinfrastructure and high-performance computing, and program performance evaluation. Summary minutes of all meetings and reports are available on the BIO Home Page via the NSF Home Page.
How is membership balanced?*The members of the BIO Advisory Committee are selected to be representative of all scientific areas and types of institutions covered by BIO activities, as well as ensuring balance for gender, ethnicity, and geographic consideration. A member of the NSF Committee on Equal Opportunity in Science Engineering (CEOSE) serves as a liaison between the two committees and participates fully in all committee meetings. Representatives from other Federal agencies are also invited to report on activities of mutal interest.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The full committee normally meets twice each year. The committees guidance and advice focuses on specific issues--both scientific and management--but in a broad, global structure directed to future planning and budget activities. In addition throughout the year, members serve on subcommittees, including Committee of Visitors, participate in workshops and ad hoc meetings to address NSF-wide issues. Also, the BIOAC Chair may attend the annual BIO senior management retreat, participate with other advisory committee chairs in meetings with the NSF Director providing guidance and advice on agency-wide issues, joint meetings with other NSF advisory committees are scheduled to facilitate interaction on areas and activities of mutual interest. Individual committee members may also represent the committee at other advisory committee meetings.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This is the only committee structured and available to advise on directorate-, agency-wide activities. The other directorate advisory committees are review panels structured solely for the review of proposals and are thereby more narrowly focused.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksThe Advisory Committee for Biological Sciences terminated on April 15, 2025, pursuant to Executive Order 14217, Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, Section 2(g).
