How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Council shall advise and consult with the President and the Director of the Peace Corps (the Director) on Peace Corps policies and programs.
How is membership balanced?*The Council has 15 voting members appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. Voting members will be broadly representative of the general public, including educational institutions; private volunteer agencies; private industry; farm organizations; labor unions; different regions of the United States; different educational, economic, racial, and national backgrounds and age groupings; and both sexes. At least seven of the voting members must be former Peace Corps Volunteers and not more than eight voting members can be members of the same political party. A voting member may not be an officer or employee of the United States Government. Voting members are Special Government Employees (SGEs). The voting members will receive compensation in accordance with 22 U.S.c. 2511(d).The Secretary of State and the Administrator of the Agency for International Development, or their designees, and the Director and Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, are non-voting, exofficio members of the Council.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*It is anticipated that the Council will meet approximately once every three months.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Council is needed to conduct on-site inspections, and make examinations, of the activities of the Peace Corps in the United States and in other countries in order to: evaluate the accomplishments of the Peace Corps; assess the potential capabilities and the future role of the Peace Corps; make recommendations to the President, the Director, and, as the Council considers appropriate, the Congress, for the purpose of guiding the future direction of the Peace Corps and of helping to ensure that the purposes and programs of the Peace Corps are carried out in ways that are economical, efficient, responsive to changing needs in developing countries, and to changing relationships among people, and in accordance with law.
