How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee reports to the President and advises the Director of the National Park Service with respect to the discharge of his responsibilites under the Act of September 22, 1961, for the preservation and the interpretation of the museum character of the principal corridor on the ground floor and principal public rooms on the first floor of the White House. The Committee makes recommendations concerning articles of furniture, fixtures and decorative objects which are used or displayed in the aforesaid areas of the White House and as the decor and arrangements therein best suited to enhance the historic and artistic values of the White House and such articles, fixtures and objects.
How is membership balanced?*As prescribed by Executive Order 11145 (as amended by Executive Order 13446), the Committee is composed of: (a) the Director of the National Park Service, who serves as Chair of the Committee; (b) the Curator of the White House; (c) the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; (d) the Chairman of the Commission of Fine Arts; (e) the Director of the National Gallery of Art; (f) the Chief Usher of the White House; and (g) so many other members as the President of the United States may from time to time appoint. The Director of the National Park Service is to designate an official of the National Park Service to act as Executive Secretary to the Committee.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee generally meets one to two times yearly. The Committee advice includes recommendations with regard to the preservation of the museum character and interpretation of the museum character of the principal corridor on the ground floor and the principal public rooms on the first floor of the White House. The Committee provides advice and counsel on additions being considered for the White House Collection and on the care and refurbishment of rooms and corridors on the State and Ground Floors of the White House.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The purpose of the Committee is to report to the President of the United States and advise the Director of the National Park Service regarding the maintenance of the White House as a public monument.

Re MEMBERSHIP--The Committee is composed of ex-officio members and Presidential appointees. Each ex-officio member continues to serve as long as the member encumbers the position designated for Committee membership; Presidential appointees serve at the pleasure of the President.

The existing wallpaper is badly damaged and further conservation efforts are not an option for consideration as the environment of the space is unstable and unregulated. The space is a high-trafficked area, and as it is the main entrance and difficult to close off for a lengthy time period.


Approved Possible Acquisition of Elizabeth Monroe Portrait, attributed to John Vanderlyn

This portrait has been on long-term loan to the White House and currently hangs on the southeast wall of the Blue Room. The Committee and Curator’s office hope to resolve issues associated with of long-term collection loans.

Approved Donation of Carmen Herrera’s Painting Dia Feriado



This acrylic on canvas painting was created in 2011 when Herrera was 96 years old. It was exhibited at SITE Santa Fe in 2024 and has only been in the artist’s collection. Donation was offered by artist’s estate. An exemption was approved to waive the 25-year deceased artist rule.

New public tour experience was implemented providing visitors an improved opportunity for understating, engagement and accessibility. Under the direction of Dr. Biden, staff collaborated with the History Channel and ESI for development.
