How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Data Users Advisory Committee (DUAC) functioned as an advisory body to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor. The Committee provided advice on technical matters related to the analysis and use of the Bureau’s statistics from the points of view of data users from various sectors of the U.S. economy, including the labor, business, research, academic and government communities. It gives particular attention to data dissemination and product innovations. The specific topics examined were selected by the agency in consultation with the Committee chairperson. The Committee provided advice in response to presentations from agency staff regarding current issues being addressed by the agency. The DUAC provided this advice during meetings.
How is membership balanced?*Committee members were persons with demonstrated professional and personal qualifications, whose experience as BLS data users covered the major program areas of the Bureau: employment, unemployment, wages, working conditions, prices, and productivity.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Typically, the DUAC met twice yearly, in the spring and the fall, to discuss technical issues related to the analysis and use of BLS data. The topics addressed during the meetings were selected by senior BLS staff in consultation with the committee chairperson. The substantial involvement of senior agency executives in the formulation of meeting agendas was evidence of the relevance of the meetings.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The DUAC provided advice on the statistical analysis and use of BLS data from a customer perspective. BLS data must satisfy a number of criteria, including consistently high statistical quality, accuracy, relevance to current social and economic issues, timeliness in reflecting today's rapidly changing economic conditions, and impartiality in subject matter and presentation. BLS products must ultimately be judged by their usefulness to the end user community. The DUAC was a significant source of advice on BLS priorities from a broad range of data users, such as suggestions concerning the addition of new programs, changes in the emphasis of existing programs or cessation of obsolete programs, and advice on innovations in data dissemination and presentation.
