How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee advises the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture (Secretaries) with respect to implementation of the management plan for the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, as required by the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Act of 2000. At the request of the Designated Federal Official or his or her designee, the committee meets periodically to gather and analyze information, conduct studies and field examinations, hear public testimony, ascertain facts, and develop recommendations concerning implementation of the management plan for the National Monument.
How is membership balanced?*The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Advisory Committee is composed of 30 members--15 primary or principal members and 15 alternate members--representing various interests and organizations specified in the Monument's enabling legislation. The Committee's membership includes representatives of local jurisdictions, the State of California, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the local conservation community, the Winter Park Authority, and the building industry. Terms for members are 3 years with a staggered rotation of membership. Calls for nomination to positions with upcoming expiration dates correspond to the staggered rotation.

Outcome CommentThe advisory committee has addressed safety issues on Highway 74, the only paved highway traversing the Monument, as well as safety for recreational backcountry use. Public involvement through the MAC has enhanced overall trust in government. Recommendations by the MAC have resulted in increased customer satisfaction, such as occurs with enhanced interpretation and environmental education. The MAC has also addressed application of various regulatory requirements for proposed projects in the Monument, such as those addressing rights-of-way projects.Number Of Grants Recommended0
