How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Issues and potential issues are discussed in the semi-annual meetings between the Committee and the Assistant Secretary (AS) for Nuclear Energy. Issues that need to be addressed are requested by the AS and the NEAC chair and co-chair assign the issue to one of several subcommittees. The subcommittees evaluate specific issues and present their findings and recommendations to the full committee. The full committee will decide if the issues was addressed properly and submit their analysis to the AS to implement.
How is membership balanced?*Care was taken in establishing the membership of NEAC that there would be a diversity of views, representatives from organizations throughout the country and members from diverse communities. Also taken into account was the members' understanding of the various technologies encompassed in the Office of Nuclear Energy's (NE) programs. The Office of Nuclear Energy will rotate members after the current member has served four consecutive years. The Office of Nuclear Energy believes that the rotation of members will continually inject new perspectives and opinions.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Approximately two meetings will be held each year; however, this number may increase depending on the needs and mission of the Office of Nuclear Energy. The recommendations of the NEAC are forwarded to the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy and he has taken action that are consistent with the Committee's recommendations for future actions. One full committee meeting was held in FY24 on April 30, 2024. In FY25, subject to the incoming administration decision to reconstitute the Committee, plans will be made for two meetings. Dates TBD.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*NE issues are dynamic and specific to the mission of Office of Nuclear Energy. The Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Assistant Secretary. The knowledge and expertise of the Committee's members are not available within DOE, and cannot be provided more cost-effectively by any other means.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings are open.
Recommendation RemarksThe Office of Nuclear Energy works closely with the Committee and welcomes its input to the office.
