How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee was established to provide advice to the Secretary on Federal, state, and local programs designated to create safe and drug-free schools, and on issues related to crisis planning. As outlined in section 4124(a), the Committee will consult with, and provide advice to, the Secretary for the programs listed in section 4124(b) that are already carried out by the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee consisted of up to 19 voting members. The Secretary, in consultation with the heads of the Federal agencies listed below, designated full-time Federal employees from the following agencies to serve on the Committee: The Department of Education. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ·The National Institute on Drug Abuse · The National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse.The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention · The Center for Mental Health Services · The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and· The Office of National Drug Control Policy.The Secretary appointed the Committee’s remaining members (up to eleven) from organizations or entities working in the following areas -- state and local government representatives, and researchers and expert practitioners in the fields of school- and community-based substance abuse and violence prevention.

Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The committee was required by law to meet to discuss the unsettling events that have taken place in our school environments. The law requires the Department to use the general public's participation and involvement to come up with recommendations to make our schools and communities safer.
